Deer Stalking in County Donegal

Donegal is the most remote and arguably the most dramatic county in Ireland for deer stalking — Atlantic-facing mountains, vast forestry blocks, low hunter pressure and genuinely wild ground. If you want space and solitude to go with your stalk, the northwest is it.

Stalking in the Northwest

County Donegal occupies the northwest corner of Ireland, separated from the rest of the Republic by a slice of Northern Ireland along the border. That geography has kept it quieter than more accessible counties — it's further from Dublin, less visited by tourists in general, and less discovered by hunting tourists in particular. Hunter pressure on Donegal's deer is considerably lower than on Wicklow's well-booked permissions.

The county's terrain mixes Atlantic blanket bog, rocky mountain, and the large Coillte (state forestry) plantations that cover much of the uplands. Sika deer thrive in the forestry environment and have spread through the county's planted hillsides over decades. Stalking here involves moving through the forestry rides and clearfells rather than open mountain — a different technique to Wicklow upland work, but often more productive in terms of encounter rates.

Donegal also sits within a multi-county operating area for Midlands Deer Stalking Ireland, who hold permissions in Donegal, Wicklow and Sligo. This flexibility means they can often accommodate specific timing and access requests across their combined 6,000+ acre permission base.

Species in Donegal

Sika Deer

Sika are the primary species on Donegal ground. The forestry and upland terrain suits them well, and populations have grown steadily in the county over recent decades. Stag season: August 1st – April 30th. Hind season: November 1st – March 31st. The Sika rut in October is the most active period — stags are vocal and aggressive and encounters can come quickly in the forestry.

Getting to Donegal

Donegal Airport (CFN) is a small regional airport near Carrickfinn with limited scheduled services, mostly connecting to Dublin. It's the closest airport geographically but the routing options are narrow.

Knock Airport / Ireland West (NOC) in County Mayo is a practical alternative, roughly 90 minutes from south Donegal. It receives some UK direct flights and is worth checking for UK visitors.

Belfast International (BFS) is often overlooked by visitors from the Republic of Ireland but works well for Donegal trips — it's roughly 2 hours from central Donegal via the M2 and A5/N14, and receives direct flights from most UK cities and several European destinations.

A hire car is mandatory for any Donegal hunting trip. The county is largely rural and the stalking grounds are well off public transport routes.

Sligo — Same Outfitter, Different Ground

Midlands Deer Stalking also operates in County Sligo, immediately south of Donegal. If Donegal dates are full or the Sligo ground better suits your timing, ask about Sligo permissions when you enquire — same outfitter, same species, similar terrain.
